2009 - The Guardian Newspaper and King's Place sponsored a workshop for young people interested in cartoons and graphic art. It was called The Big Draw. Images from this project can be seen at: Making Pictures - the Big Draw at King's Place.
2009 - My cooperation with King's Place community outreach projects has continued with a documentation of the work of artist-in-residence Abigail Fallis at Thornhill Primary School in Islington. The project has tramsformed balloons, papier-mâché and paint into representations of endangered British species. There will be an exhibition at King's Place later in the year - in the mean time some examples of work in progress are given below.
The final stage in the project can be seen at the link: Thornhill Project - final stage
Earlier photos of work in progress can be seen at: King's Place community outreach - Thornhill project.
2008 - I have recently started a cooperation with the Kings Place Music Foundation's Outreach Programme. The first project we have carried through has been a visual documentation of the work of the Copenhagen Youth Project while it was Making the Christmas Decorations. I look forward to further projects with King's Place in 2009
I cooperated with Patrick Fenech on a project organised by the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Malta. The project has the title SIGHT and is a contribution to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Portraits of the participants can be found at the link to SIGHT
Between 2006 and 2008 I worked with the British Council on a visual and interview based documentation of aspects of the experience of migrant workers in Europe. Starting in Northern Ireland I am learning about the lives of people who have come to Ireland since EU expansion, the people they are meeting, and the people they have left behind. The project will result in resources which can be used in education and advocacy. The experience for me is both moving and enlightening. Images from the project can be found at Ordinary Lives : people and stories.
The Ordinary Lives exhibition opened at the Northern Ireland National Assembly, Stornont on March 20th. Some images from the event can be seen at Ordinary Lives. There is now a website which brings together text and images from this project. For more information go to the British Council Northern Ireland Ordinary Lives website.
2006 - I have been engaged in a visual documentation of English language education for several years now. The most recent contribution to the archive is a series of images from classrooms in Vietnam. A selection is given in Vietnam Classrooms.
I gave a training programme in Documentary Photography to participants in a project in Romania called Putting Europe in Frame. This is run by a Romanian NGO (www.rfnc.ro). During the workshop, I took a set of portraits of the 20 young people involved in the project. I feel these images are as powerful an argument as you could hope to find for the early return of Romania to the European mainstream. The portfolio can be found at the European Futures - young Romanians link.
2005 - A recent major project was commissioned by the British Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have documented the experiences of people from different faith and ethnic communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and have attempted to place this experience in its European context. The shoots and interviews took place in February and March 2004. A sample of images from the 14 different participants can be seen at the Diverse Europeans: ordinary people link. There will be exhibitions in Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla, and Mostar during 2005, and an exhibition in London or Brussels is planned for 2006.
2004 - In an earlier project "Looking at English Language Teachers" I documented the work and lives of teachers in 12 different countries - from China to Senegal. Examples from the Senegal set can be found at the Looking at ELT - Senegal link.
2004 - Along side these international projects, I am also involved in a major documentation of the life and work of one of the longest established theatres in Poland - Teatr Polski w Warsawie. The first set of images were taken in the men's tailoring department. They can be seen at the link to Teatr Polski - documentary archive - men's tailoring.
