2010 - June

Torver Commons

There's a deep pleasure in returning to the same place in different seasons. It's years since we were in the Lakes in June. We walked the Duddon Valley from end to end, and Torver Commons and Coniston. Nothing dramatic or taxing, simply the pleasure of walking, of being here. If you would like to see more images they are at Lake District, June 2010.

2010 - April

Beachy Head

Another sunny day - wonders will never cease. We talk the train and did the same walk from Polegate to Eastbourne via Beachy Head. All the animals were out in the sunshine enjoying the change in the weather. For more photos, visit: The English Seaside - Beachy Head and Eastbourne #2

Sizewell

A week of incredibly good walking weather along the Suffolk Coast, despite the biting wind off the North Sea. We visited Walberswick, Minsmere, Sizewell and Orford, and found reed beds, booming bitterns and a nuclear power station. An odd mix..For images, visit: The English Seaside: Suffolk.

2010 - January

Cheshire

It's been horribly inconvenient time, but also spectacularly beautiful. If you'd like to see more pictures of how our bit of Cheshire was looking at the beginning of January 2010, go to: Winter in Cheshire.

sheep

More sheep... In the Lakes for New Year once again, walking in Torver, Coniston, the Duddon Valley, and St Bee's Head. Incredibly, we caught a window in the weather and had five days of good walking (with our friend Alex). There was some sun on most days - and no rain on the one windy one. Lucky or what...? If you want to see more photos, go to The English Lakes, New Year 2010.

2009 - November

Norwich Cathederal

I don't think of myself as an architecture photographer, but visiting Norwich at the weekend I found myself in the beautiful Norman cathederal and couldn't resist the opportunity. Photos from the visit can be found at: Norwich Cathederal: a winter visit

2009 - October

morecambe

A wet and windy weekend at the resort of Morecambe in NW England - staying in the spectacularly beautiful art-deco Midland Hotel. Although the bay and the surrounding countryside are better looking than the resort itself, the overall experience is uplifting! For more photos, click on Morecambe and the Duddon Sands

2009 - September

Aspet

Down through France and down to Barcelona - Dover / Calais down to the Pyrénées and Barcelona with a starting and ending the Sarthe where friends live. A good journey. Photos can be seen at France / Spain 2009.

2009 - July

China 2009

The emergence of a leisure class? As part of a personal project we travelled from Shanghai to the Yellow Mountain (Huangshan) then down to Guangzhou and back home via Suzhou. Half of China seemed to be on holiday - and the other half were working hard. China is changing very quickly. Exhilarating and thought provoking. To see a sample of images from the journey, click on China 2009.

2009 - June

walkers

Summer came back in June and teaching finished. We took the day off and went for a walk along the South Downs and round the coast to Eastbourne. An hour and a half from central London, and worth the journey. For images from the high Downs to Lovers' Leap at Beachy Head go to: The English Seaside: the South Downs.

2009 - January

sheep

The Lake District once again - this time with some of the best weather we've ever had (other than a misty afternoon when the shot was made). Five days of near perfect winter walking around Coniston and the Duddon Valley - sometimes on our own and one day with friends. If you'd like to see more, visit: Sheep, hills, water, sheep

2008 - December

tower bridge

A trip down the river to see friends who live in Greenwich. There's a new fast ferry service on the Thames which I'd not taken before - the last time I'd gone down the river was twenty years ago... Things have changed, though Turner would still recognise the light! You can see more pictures at Waterloo to Greenwich, a river journey. By the way - the green line on the Park View photo isn't a mistake - it's the Greenwich Meridien laser marker...

October

Severn Sisters

Incredible Autumn weather. If you walk from Eastbourne towards Brighton you go along the top of England's white cliffs. The flowers mark where people have jumped. You can see more pictures at The English Seaside: Beachy Head.

August

Brighton

Another day at another seaside. I'm not sure why I enjoy this so much, but the train fare from London to Brighton to has to be one of the best buys around. Just an hour away and there you are at the English seaside - Brighton.

July

Wimereux

Another journey through France. La Rochelle to see friends and swim in the Atlantic, the Tarn to make apricot jam, the Pyrennes to walk and then a return through the Sarthe (where Adrienne expects her first child) and back to the coast for a walk by the sea at Wimereux ... a good break. Pictures can be seen at France 2008

June 14

bethan_steve

Our friends Bethan and Steve celelebrated their marriage, and Steve's 60th birthday in outrageously generous style on June 14. A very good time was had by one and all. Photos can be seen at A celebration.

May 31

Whitstable

Not sure why I seem to be getting to the seaside so much of late... We went to visit friends Michael and Maggie in Canterbury, and hence to Tankerton (next to Whitstable on the Thames Estuary) for lunch and a walk. The sun shone. Children played in the mud. People with dogs looked at the fishing boats in Whitstable harbour. A Saturday by the sea. If you're interested, photos can be seen at The English Seaside - Tankerton.

May 16 2008

May 16

I was 60 on May 15th. Friends gathered together on the 16th to help me get over the shock. Armed with my Freedom Pass and Senior Railcard and with the support of my friends, I now feel able to face the next decade and looking forward to seeing what happens next. It's been amazingly good so far. Thanks to Sue for organising it all. Thanks to friends for being there. Snaps can be seen at 60 years on.

May

Southwold

A sunny day away from London. Southwold may disappear under the North Sea in a few years, but for the moment it's a delight. Photos can be seen at The English Seaside - a colourful day

December

Sheep

The end of one year, beginning of another. We were in the South Lake District over New Year. Mixed weather (so what's new?) but some beautiful days. Photos can be seen at The English Lake District, 2008.

2007

October / November

Sri Lanka

An intense month. These are some incidental images from the journey. Places along the way, friends and wonderful photographers like Shahidul Alam (seen at the DRIK agency) and Dominic Sansoni (with 2 of his kids), a very wild elephant, the Galle Face Hotel, my son Bill, Les Invalides, the new station at St Pancras. A journey.

October

Riga 2007

Riga has undergone many changes since I first lived there in 1992, some have been positive, some less so. It was good to be back there, though briefly, at the beginning of October 2007. You can see some photos taken as part of a wider documentation at Riga, a perspective.

September

Le Cagire

France for a week's holiday. Too short, but the sun shone and we walked and walked... You can see images at France 2007 #2.

September

Moscow

In Russia for work. The journey by train from St Petersburg to Moscow takes five and a half hours. You pass two other significant towns in the 650 km journey. Images can be seen at St Petersburg to Moscow, a journey.

July

family

Sue and I were in the English Lake District in July. We actually managed to have some of the only dry days this summer, and were pleased to be able to take advantage of it... Storm clouds swept over from time to time, but apart from one day we had clear skies and sunshine too. If you've never been to the Lakes, they are very beautiful. Photos can be seen at The English Lake District.

July

Utrero

I was in Spain and Portugal working on the Migration in Europe project. I visited participants living in Utrero near Seville, and then went to Caldas da Rainha near Lisbon. These are some incidental travel shots... You can see them at Iberia

April

diner

Washington for work and it's the coldest April for decades. Climate change here we come. Walked from The Mall (not a shopping arcade) to the National Portrait Gallery and then up to Dupont Circle and beyond.... A glimpse of the city can be found at: Taking a walk: Washington.

March

walk

After what's been a long and complicated year we went for a walk in the Pyrennees, stopping with friends who live near Le Mans in the Sarthe on the way down from the Channel and again on the way home. It was early in the season so there was still snow on the tops, but a profusion of flowers in the valleys. Various dogs met us in the villages and came along for the walk. If you want to see more pictures go to A walk in the Pyrennees.

2006

November

Edinburgh - walking

Two days in Edinburgh. On one cool evening I had an hour to take a walk between finishing work and having dinner. Incidental photography can be seen at Edinburgh: an evening in November.

November

The Sphinx at Giza

In Cairo for 10 days, but most of the time taken up with the training assignment I was doing. However, I had one day off and went to the Great Pyramids at Giza and the Stepped Pyramid at Saqqara - and then back to Cairo for the evening. Some incidental photography can be seen at Cairo - a day off....

October

Cheshire - October 2006

The clocks went back to Winter Time in the UK this Sunday. My son Bill came to visit us in Cheshire and we took the dog on our faviourite local walk. Out of the house, round the corner and there you are... Photos can be found at: Walking the dog.

September

Hanoi - night

I was in Vietnam and Thailand during September working on an education reform evaluation and then doing some training. A mixture of road and street shotsfrom Vietnam can be found at Vietnam - travel.

March

Road to the Dead Sea

A lot of travelling in the last three months, but no time for photography. I was in Amman for four days and went down to the Red Sea in my friend Charlie's new (6 year old) Mercedes. Sandstorm, hailstorm and then a little luxury by the Dead Sea. The images can be seen at Amman to the Dead Sea - Charlie's Mercedes

2005

December

. The marginale - motorcycle boys

The final trip of the year was to Brazil again - finishing an evaluation consultancy at the Catholic University of Sao Paulo. On the last weekend I went to the coast with two colleagues. Some images from the set I took can be found at Sao Paulo to Ihlabella - a journey to the coast

August

The taxidermist's ranch

A crazy month, I was in Namibia and South Africa for a total of five days on an evaluation assignment. The interviews were fascinating and we got some good portraits for the project, but otherwise all I saw were rooms and Roads.

July

Karachi

I was recently in Karachi for the final stage of an evaluation consultancy. I very few opportunities for photography (and most of these were from the back of an armoured jeep...), but was able to put together a small selection of images taken from the roads between the British High Commission and the Aga Khan University, plus some examples from work done at the studio and home of Amin Gulgee, one of Pakistan's leading sculptors. Images from this set can be found at Karachi

March ... I've just returned from Sao Paulo where I have been working as a consultant on the evaluation of an curriculum development project. I've not had the black and white negatives developed yey, but I had a digital SLR with me and have included a selection of images from this set. They can be found at Sao Paulo - day & night

2004 ... Back after the summer I've just put up a small selection of photos in a series I'm calling the English Seaside. They arose from a visit to Southwold on the Norfolk Coast and St Bee's Head in Cumbria. It goes without saying that the temperature was around 12 degrees C. You can see the images at The English Seaside.

The English seaside

I was in Sao Paolo, Brazil, for work in September 2004. I had two hours on Saturday morning before my plane left, so went for a walk. If you go down the hill from the Catholic University of Sao Paulo, you get to a fair sized park. It was early in the morning, but performers in a local cultural festival had started and the food fair was serving. From the park, I went back up the hill to the hotel, and then to the airport. You can see images at Sao Paulo - Saturday morning.

I started a new project in 2004 with friends and contacts world-wide. Called "500 metres" we're looking at the areas we live in and putting together collections of images which give an insight into the contrasts that can be found within very small areas. We hope that you enjoy them as more links are added. The first contributions can be found at 500 M. I'll continue to add personal and professional work as it gets done.

If you would like to see a cross section of earlier work, go to Portfolio 2004-05. This a portfolio collection which I am developing as a means of consolidating my professional practice.  I'd be grateful for any comments you might have on this set.
